Hello,

I’ve been learning about CMS platforms like wordpress, drupal and joomla for a few months now. Mostly just poking around and moving slowly forward on whatever seems viable. There is a huge array of plugins, extensions, addons and whatever for setups such as these. I’ve also been playing with oscommerce, zencart and others. It is hard for me to tell which is really ‘best’. It might be the most important detail to have fantastic functionality and ease of use. Right now I am looking for a platform that makes producing shipping charges extremely simple. I am also very interested in making product pages that seem to be a bit more than standard.
Pretend you are selling a T-shirt and below that T-shirt would be 3 radio buttons or a single drop down box. These options would represent 3 different designs that would go on the T-shirt and each one costs a dollar more than the last. I really need to be able to make a setup where the price is reflected for each radio button immediately in a shopping cart style scrolling module located right on the products page. Any ideas or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have worked with OSCommerce, Zen Cart and Joomla with VirtueMart, all of them support changing the price based on an attribute (radio button).
All of them are very powerful but I found Joomla / VirtueMart combination to be intuitive and easier to customize.
Good luck!

How do I customize the opening page? I have designed sites in Pagemill and Dreamweaver, but this has to be done in Zencart (so Iv’e been told), and I don’t have a clue. Any help will be appreciated!

i am not too familiar with zen cart but these type of sites are build on php.
it is a bit different from regular HTML file, it is sometime chopped into few parts and sometime it is driven by template.

if you have a section in the control panel where you can edit a template, you can always select it all, paste it in dreamweaver, edit it (may not be WYSIWYG type but at least it will be in environment that you are familiar with,
after you done copy all the code and paste it back into the template

i just visited zen cart website, it is template deriven, download one of the templates there and see how it is build

Say I have a web interface that I have designed in Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Fireworks. And that’s exactly how I want it to look on the web. There is a very simple navigation set up, and the layout is simple as well. It’s just a box with rounded corners (which will contain the content). I would want that box to always be centered in the browser window.

Given the Illustrator or Fireworks mock up file, how much should I expect to pay someone to code it into an HTML/CSS template for use with ZenCart which I can then use to build my own ecommerce site?

Just to code from your design, I would say would take 5 or 6 hours. I would charge you $100 per hour. If you also wanted me to set up your ecommerce stuff, then it would take a few hours mor. You might be looking at $2000 when it’s all said and done.

I am preparing to open a fish and aquarium supply store. Initially, it will be Internet-only (I plan on adding retail and franchise locations starting in about six months after my Web site goes live). I am in the process of deciding if I should use OScommerce or ZenCart. I myself do not know PHP, but will be hiring a programmer to design the Web site, and will maintain the products list/Web site content myself. I am looking for the ability to add custom modules as my business grows, so I am leaning toward OScommerce. That said, however, I am also looking for a solution that will allow me to maintain products, pictures, content, etc without taking the time to ascertain more than a very basic understanding of PHP. With this in mind, should I go with ZenCart? Something else? I appreciate everyone’s input!

Both Zen Cart and osCommerce will require you to have at least a littel understanding of PHP. In my opinion, osCommerce is superior to Zen Cart in most respects.

The only trouble that you might have is to make a nice looking osCommerce site – it does take some time to learn how to make osCommerce look nice. But that’s not a real problem if you ahve someone who can help you.

My blog is at www.clubosc.com – feel free to have a look – also at the Hot 100 (actually 60 or so, but there we are) osCommerce shops – these shops show just what can be done with osCommerce. http://www.clubosc.com/hot100/

My own experience shows that osCommerce is very suitable for most ecomm site owners – with a little bit of backup from a decent coder, you can have a great experience with it.

Which one is the best? That is simple to design and maintain the store? OSCommerce? Magento? ZenCart? Other?

My Opinion is OSCommerce.. Cause it already known so long for the performance..

I am making my own ecommerce website. I have hosting with HostMonster. They offer Shopsite, Oscommerce, Zencart, cubecart, and Magento. I design and manage my websites in dreamweaver with HTML/CSS and add inventory through PHP.

How could these ecommerce solutions help me add a cart and checkout process to the store with my own design, and which would be the best and easiest to fit my needs?

THanks
PHP and MySQL
I am making this for a friend. I am makign admin pages on the site so she can add/delete inventory as necessary. She has no knowledge of webdesign.

You will need to understand the layout of the files in order to make changes in the "look and feel" of most ecommerce solutions. You can use dreamweaver as a design tool but then you have to take the html/css/js generated by dreamweaver and fit it into the ecommerce site properly. Some of it is easy stuff like adding to the css file already used by the app and uploading graphic components to the right directories. Some of it might require editing php files.

First thing to do is evaluate these ecommerce solutions to see which one is the best match for your friend’s business operations.
